Just something interesting....

You know that little nursery rhyme/song "Ring Around the Rosy"? I'm sure you all do, but do you know the story behind it? I didn't until my history class on Friday. It is really quite interesting. Here is the story:
Take yourself back to the time of the Black Plague (Bubonic Plague) in England.

"Ring around the rosy,"
Referring to the ring that would appear on the underneath of a person's arm when he or she got the plague.

"Pocketful of posy,"
Referring to the the herbs or such that they would put in their pockets to "protect" them from the dreaded plague.

"Ashes, ashes,"
Referring to how they would burn the infected bodies of the dead, because there was no time to bury them.

"We all fall down!"
They thought that they were all going to fall from it. I suppose this means die from it....I didn't quite catch that part of the meaning!

Well, that certainly puts a whole new meaning to the song huh? "Ring Around the Rosy" will never seem the same again!

This has nothing to do with the above, but I found it on Godtube and could not resist putting it up here! So cute and sweet. It will put a smile on you face. (Don't forget to turn off my music down at the bottom.)

Next post...a tag from Ella. I haven't thought of 15 things yet Ella, so that is why I didn't post it today! ;-)

Have a blessed Lord's day tomorrow you guys!

That ring around the rosy story made me sad. But thanks for the smiles. Leave it to children to give us smiles. mama

What interesting background...though slightly gross! =)

Yes, 15 things are hard to come up with.

Hey Neesie,
I learned this in my classe two years ago. I heard that the ending line was supposed to be 'ashes ashes we all fall dead' (because they all thought they would die) but was changed so kids could sing it in a fun way! Hope you have a blessed sunday!

Ok, that background was really sad, but the video made me giggle! I esp. like the one where the girl asks "In Bible times did they really talk that fancy?" SO cute.

Oh, I never knew, how sad and how many times I have played that when I was growing up and with my children and grandchildren. It is good that even though it was a sad song then down through time it has brought much happiness. I know it has to me. The other was so cute. Mrs. Connie

There's another song similar in background to 'Ring Around the Rosy' that goes:

"I had a little bird,
Her name was Enza,
I opened up the door
And in flew Enza."

It was based on the influenza epidemic in the early 1900s. If you reword that last line it goes:

...And influenza.

So sad, yet true!

Shalom! :-)
